Emerald PUD is looking to add a knowledgeable, experienced, and motivated Mechanic to our team. This position directly helps with maintenance and repair of our fleet and equipment. This critical work ensures our crews will have the tools and equipment needed to provide safe and reliable power to our customers. Job Summary:

Mechanics play a key role in Emerald`s mission to provide safe, reliable power in an environmentally responsible manner. This position`s primary responsibility is to maintain and repair all of the utility`s vehicles and motorized equipment. This critical function ensures crews have the tools and equipment necessary to repair outages and complete customer jobs, system upgrades, and routine maintenance in a safe and effective manner.   

Duties and Responsibilities:

Amount of time working in each function may vary. It is expected that the amount of time spent performing each function will fluctuate as needed for an employee to successfully manage their schedule. 

  1. Vehicle and Equipment Support- Repair, overhaul, and maintain all utility vehicles and equipment on a daily basis, including diesel, gasoline, and non-motorized equipment. Perform routine, scheduled services and safety inspections on vehicles and equipment. Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems as needed. Straighten, repair, and paint damaged vehicles and equipment as needed. Operate manufacturer`s and aftermarket diagnostic software. Design and fabricate equipment out of steel as necessary. Keep accurate electronic maintenance and vehicle records. Assist with maintenance and repair of the equipment at the Short Mountain methane power plant, including an after-hours on-call rotation.   
  2. Work Management- Embrace the culture of empowerment by using sound judgment, thoroughly reviewing and analyzing problems, making reasonable recommendations, and developing alternate solutions when necessary. Work independently and collaboratively, take ownership of assignments, and follow through to ensure projects and tasks are completed on time and in a thorough manner. Take initiative to solve problems and explore opportunities to increase efficiencies.  
  3. Team Contribution and Communication- Focus on developing strong working relationships with colleagues. Look for opportunities to collaborate with and provide support to other team members and departments in order to accomplish tasks and projects. Communicate with vendors and contractors in a professional manner and negotiate with tact. 
  4. Computer and Technology Use- Utilize computer systems and programs to gather, track, and analyze data on a daily basis. Help generate meaningful information on a regular basis to assist with decision making, increase efficiency, and maximize productivity. Be receptive to opportunities and changes involving new technologies and procedures.
  5. Customer Service- Provide exceptional service to both internal and external customers to ensure expectations are met or exceeded. Help to build Emerald`s brand as a trusted advisor and provider of choice by looking for opportunities to enhance the customer experience.     
  6. Perform other duties as assigned related to the job. 

Job Skills:

Experience:

  1. Must have five years on-the-job experience in truck and equipment repair.
  2. Must have knowledge, understanding, and ability to use computer-aided diagnostic equipment.
  3. Must have a currently valid Oregon Class A CDL.  If CDL is not a Class A, must obtain a Class A within one year of hire. 
  4. Experience working on hydraulics is desirable.
  5. Experience working on heavy equipment is desirable.
  6. Experience working on large engines is desirable.
  7. Experience working on utility equipment is desirable.
  8. Experience working with fleet management systems is desirable.

Job Specific Requirement:

  1. Must provide own hand tools for use on the job.

Education:

  1. Degree in industrial mechanics, automotive, or diesel repair or completed an apprenticeship to reach journeyman level, or vocational certifications, technical certifications, or post-secondary degree desirable. 
  2. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. 
  3. Must be certified to work on air brake and air conditioning systems or obtain the certification within 24 months of hire. 
  4. Must be willing to take continuing education courses in order to stay current with Emerald`s changing equipment and technology needs and requirements.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  1. Must be able to lift, carry, pull, and push items sometimes in excess of 60 lbs. in rough terrain and adverse weather.
  2. Must be able to crouch, stoop, twist, turn and balance on a regular basis.
  3. Must be able to climb and use ladders on a regular basis.
  4. Must be able to continually assess the environment and prioritize safe work practices due to regular exposure to hazardous chemicals, materials, and conditions in order to ensure personal safety and the safety of others.
  5. Must be able to work directly in the Short Mountain plant and landfill, which will result in exposure to adverse weather, strong smells, hazardous chemicals and materials, heavy machinery, and loud noise. 
  6. Must be willing to work over the regular 40 hour/week schedule, be on an on-call rotation after normal business hours and be willing to be called out for service in the event of a power outage or other emergency, including Short Mountain callouts.
  7. This position is subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol policies and testing.   
  8. Hepatitis B vaccine highly recommended due to potential exposure to infectious materials.
