Required QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education:

High school graduation or equivalent supplemented by course work in horticulture.

Required Experience:

* One (1) year of experience in the operation and maintenance of grounds and construction heavy equipment.

* Six (6) months of experience in grounds maintenance.

Licensure or Certification Requirements

A current Oregon Driver's License or ability to get one by date of hire.

Preferred Education

* Associate's degree in Horticulture or related field.

* A current pesticide applicator's certification.

Preferred Experience

* Experience with integrated pest management.

* Experience working at large public sector institutions, colleges, or universities.

* Experience with sustainable landscaping including landscaping with native plants and xeriscaping.

* Experience with installing and repairing irrigation systems.

Position Purpose:

The purpose of this position is to provide grounds maintenance to effectively maintain and beautify the college grounds.

Essential Functions:

* Operate a variety of grounds equipment, such as backhoes, loaders, forklift, boom lift, and cat crawlers to excavate ditches and develop grounds for the installation of sidewalks, lawns, trees or irrigation systems.

* Care for lawns, athletic fields, shrubs, trees and groundcover by mowing, fertilizing, aerating, pruning, weeding, top dressing, edging, irrigating, planting and removing dead or damaged plants. Athletic field care also includes marking for events and moving bleachers and soccer goal sets. Maintain artificial turf soccer and track fields.

* Remove blackberries and poison oak; remove wasp and hornets nests; properly and safety mix and apply insecticides, herbicides or fungicides according to Lane's Integrated Pest Management Plan.

* Repair or replace PVC irrigation systems; program controllers for proper irrigation; remove controllers for shipment to repair facility.

* Rake, vacuum and bag leaves; pick up trash; hose and pressure wash dirt and debris off walkways and walls; remove snow and ice using hand and power equipment; put sand and deicer on ice; repair holes in parking lots; empty trash containers and sawdust bins.

* Follow Lane's Integrated Pest Management Plan.

* Respectfully interact with students, other employees, and the public during the course of completing tasks. Exhibit a customer service attitude.

* Contribute to Lane's core value of Sustainability by utilizing and recommending sustainable landscaping practices such as mulching grass, recycling yard debris, low to no water planting and maintenance techniques, and hand weeding.

* Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.

Supervision Statement:

Works under the general supervision of the Director of Facilities Management and Planning. A Lead Groundskeeper schedules, assigns, inspects and approves work and is available to answer questions or troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. Assignments are received in the form of weekly or seasonal work schedules, daily work orders or oral or written instructions. After an initial orientation period work is performed independently or as a member of a crew. Work is reviewed periodically during and after completion for quality, quantity and safety of operations. Supervision of others is not normally a responsibility of this position.

Physical Demands/Working Environment:

Physical strength and agility are required to operate tractor-mounted equipment, lawnmowers, and other manual or power tools. Must have the ability to: Bend, stoop, and twist; and lift and carry trash, grounds debris, containers, and equipment weighing up to thirty (30) pounds. Working conditions may include standing and/or walking for extended periods and working outdoors in all kinds of weather. Work Safely.

Skill in:

* Operation of grounds equipment used for backhoes, forklifts, hydraulic boom lifts, dump trucks, cat crawlers, and platform lifts and loaders.

* Safe operation of hand and power mowers, edgers, rakes, weed trimmers, pruners, saws, shovels, hoes, brooms, blowers, vacuums, hoses, pressure washers, grinders, brake lathes, welders and chemical applicators.

* Irrigation operations and repair.
