POSITION PURPOSE:

Plans, promotes, and delivers a comprehensive program of guidance and counseling to assist students in the areas of academic achievement, personal-social growth, career decision making, and community contribution.

Provide students in non-traditional educational settings a dynamic and engaging school counseling program; assist students in creating plans toward reintegration to comprehensive schools, including pathways toward high school completion.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• The counselor will support student success by:
  
  • Reviewing referrals for placement and conducting file reviews.
  • Coordinating student intake including meeting with families and students for program tours.
  • Providing academic development support to students, guardians, and other invested parties with information about district and community educational resources.
  • Assisting students with personal and social development; counseling students individually and in groups concerning social or personal issues which affect educational progress.
  • Assisting students in development of cultural sensitivity and respect for individual differences, development of communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Communicating with parents, staff and other designated personnel regarding individual student issues and concerns.
  • Demonstrating a commitment to trauma-informed and anti-racist practices.
  • Participating in staff development, in-services and training related to diversity, equity and inclusion in public education; modeling appropriate behaviors; developing, recommending and implementing improvements to educational and transition services with awareness and understanding of their impact in a racially and culturally diverse community.
  • Collaborating with teams to develop student health and wellness plans.
  • Collaborating in the transition planning of students to their next educational placement.
  • Assisting in coordinating programs and services with external agencies as needed.
  • Maintaining knowledge and skills on current research, effective practices and trends related to support for students who are experiencing stabilization after traumatic experiences.
  • Responding to student behavior escalations using trauma informed practices.
• In the elementary and middle school program, the Counselor will support students and teams by:
  
  • Observing students in resident district placements prior to admission
  • Coordinating student access to technology
• In the justice involved youth setting, the Counselor will support students and teams by:
  
  • Collaborating with students to develop Individual Learning Plans (ILP) that include realistic, measurable, and practical instructional goals.
  • Holding Special Education eligibility meetings as needed.
  • Working with ESD and Lane County Youth Services to support students with new or recurring alcohol, drug, social and/or related issues.
  • Participating in scheduling students for classes to assure academic and personal needs are met; recommending and supporting interventions for at-risk students; collaborating with Special Education, and others to support students with special needs.
  • Providing information about community resources for personal and social needs.
  • Assisting students in exploring personal abilities, interests, and skills in order to design academic plans and life goals; provide information to assist students, parent and the community the ability to investigate and access college and career information through a variety of resources. Connecting students to positive leaders/role models in career exploration.
  • Participating on a team that will attend district, college, university and other post-secondary educational institution meetings to represent students and community interests. Connecting youth with trades and career interests. Supporting students in finding jobs and internships.
  • Maintaining a professional demeanor when representing the District at all times.
  • Complying with policies, practices, rules, handbooks, and performance expectations.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
• The counselor will implement counseling services in compliance with all state and federal laws, the Counselor by:
  
  • Developing a comprehensive school counseling program in a unique setting.
  • Monitoring student issues and follow up effectively.
  • Assisting parents and teachers in understanding and responding to the developmental needs of adolescents in alternative education settings.
  • Communicating in culturally responsive ways with youth, families, community partners, and staff.
  • Presenting instructional/informational programs to individuals, groups of students, parents, and teachers.
  • Interpreting data to assist school staff with curriculum planning.
  • Coordinating data team meetings
  • Assisting teachers with the integration of guidance activities into the curriculum.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master's Degree in Counseling, School Counseling, School Psychology, Social Work or equivalent
2. TSPC License or the ability to register as a Counselor through TSPC
3. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in public education preferred including:
   • Experience in Alternative Education serving at-risk or juvenile justice involved youth is preferred.
   • Experience in high stress and potentially volatile environments
4. A valid First Aid/CPR Card is preferred.
