The Elevator Pitch: **Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?**This Senior Network Systems Engineer role in the VMware Service Provider & Edge Business Unit provides you an opportunity to work on an innovative new product that is envisioned to disrupt the telecom industry. In this role, you will be responsible for designing and implementing a robust, scalable, low-latency control platform for 5G radio access networks. You will also contribute to designing and implementing developer APIs and SDKs that will allow 3rd-party developers to build intelligent applications for or using 5G networks. In the process, you will work and innovate with the latest technologies in cloud, networking and 5G, collaborate closely with experts in these fields, experience first-hand the process of building a new product, and work in an environment that provides ample learning and career growth opportunities.Success in the Role: **What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?**As a key member of the R&D engineering team, you will drive the design, implementation, optimization and testing of the control platform for 5G networks. The technical success of your contributions will be defined in terms of control-plane messaging throughput, control-plane latency, platform robustness, conformance to industry-defined interfaces, ability to deploy and host variety of in-house and 3rd-party control applications and resource utilization of the platform in terms of compute, memory and network bandwidth.+ Within 30 days of joining, you will be expected to ramp up on the system architecture and high-level design details of the platform components. You will be expected to deliver a few simple bug fixes or small features to gain familiarity with the development process.+ Within 90 days, you will be expected to design, implement and test more complex features. You will be expected to code in both C and C++, so strong experience in C/C++ is required.+ Within 180 days, you will be expected to gain a more complete understanding of the end-to-end system. You should be able to work with leads of different components to design and implement features that require coordination across the broader team. You will be able to troubleshoot issues reported by customers and improve the usability of the product.+ Within 360 days, you will be expected to independently design and develop complex features and collaborate with various team members as needed. You will be a self-starter and lean into projects until the best solution is found.The Work: **What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?**Your regular activities may be modified to suit your professional strengths, but you can expect that you'd own components of the control platform, which in turn means that you will:+ Design the components, including writing design documents for internal consumption+ Collaborate with other engineers, QA and product management to reach agreement on the design, especially regarding the various interfaces and interactions of your component with others+ Implementation of the module, most commonly in C/C++ Optimization of the module, especially in terms of latency and resource utilization+ Writing test cases for the component+ Bug fixing and customer support related to the component**What is** **the leadership** **like for this role? Rakesh is a Director of R&D in VMware and leads an R&D engineering team that is responsible for several VMware products in the telecom space. Rakesh joined VMware in 2019 after the startup he had co-founded, Uhana Inc., to commercialize his Stanford research on data-driven and software-defined telecom networks, was acquired by VMware. His team is based largely in the US and follows open culture at work where everyone is encouraged to learn from each other, teach others and grow along with others by being collaborative and courteous.**Where is this role located?**This team has been historically based out of VMware's Palo Alto office. However, this role is open to fully remote.
