Emerald PUD is looking to add a knowledgeable, experienced, and motivated Accounting Technician II to our team. This position`s primary responsibility is to perform advanced accounting and auditing activities. Additionally, this position will be responsible for balancing the general ledger and accounting subsystem management, detailed reconciliations, financial statement preparation and managing miscellaneous accounts receivable. ​Job Summary:

The Accounting Technician II position plays a key role in Emerald`s long-term strategic plan. This role performs increasingly important and advanced accounting and auditing activities. The primary focuses of the position include general ledger and accounting sub system management, detailed reconciliations, financial statement preparation, and providing back up for several other functions, including payroll. These critical functions ensure Emerald remains financially sound and can continue to move forward with our strategic initiatives and projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Amount of time working in each function may vary. It is expected that the amount of time spent performing each function will fluctuate as needed for an employee to successfully manage their schedule.

1. Accounting Activities

  • Responsible for maintenance, reconciliation, and analysis of assigned general ledger accounts and accounting subsystems, including:
    -Payroll accounts
    -Petty cash
    -Payable accounts
    -Receivable accounts
    -Material inventory
    -Work orders
    -Fixed assets
    -Budget review
  • Perform complex daily reconciliation cash accounts; interface with Customer Service on reconciling items and issues.
  • Prepare monthly mill billings, purchased power billings and other Miscellaneous Accounts Receivable billings as assigned.
  • Gather board expense reports for monthly payroll processing; reconcile and prepare monthly board expenditure report.
  • Prepare journal entries, year-end closing adjustments, reconciliations, and documentation for the annual audit.
  • Calculate and accrue other utility financial obligations as assigned.
  • Summarize current financial status by collecting information and by preparing monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Collect and summarize information for internal and external reporting needs and coordinate with other internal and external parties including but not limited to Federal and State Agency Staff and External Auditors.

2. Communication and Collaboration

  • Backup for payroll and accounts payable processing, performing the functions as requested and in the Accounting Technician`s absence.
  • Assist with reviewing and monitoring of accounting policies and practices for compliance with the accepted principles of financial management and internal controls.
  • Identify finance/accounting-related problem situations and make recommendations for solutions.
  • Act as a financial resource for all departments.

3. Work Management

  • Work independently and take ownership of assignments, following through to ensure projects and tasks are completed on time and in a detailed and thorough manner.

4.      Perform other special projects and duties as assigned related to the job.

Job Skills:

1.      Strong administrative skills to ensure the accounting and finance work gets completed timely and accurately.

2.      Ability to develop work products independently, own projects when necessary, organize work and time effectively, and meet stringent schedules with minimum supervision.

3.      Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

4.      Ability to use sound judgment and maintain strict standards of confidentiality when faced with problems or addressing employee and customer situations.

5.      Capable of working well in a team environment and collaborating across departments, including peers, customers, and agency personnel. 

6.      Willing and able to learn new concepts and systems and adopt alternative techniques within the rapidly changing utility industry.

Experience:

1.      Minimum 3 years of direct experience working and applying generally accepted accounting principles, regulations, and internal controls.

2.      Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

Education:

1.      Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

2.      Associates Degree in Accounting preferred, though long tenure in an accounting role may be accepted in place of a degree.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

1.      Prolonged periods sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer.

2.      Use of office equipment where some agility and hand-eye coordination are needed.

3.      Work environment can include shared workspaces and exposure to consistent or frequent noise from employee conversations.
