Our Children’s Trust is seeking a Staff Accountant to join our Operations team.  

The position is a salary, exempt, and a member of the OCTWA Bargaining Union. The annual salary range is $64,672 - $81,427 and is benefit eligible. Benefits include 100% employer paid medical and dental for employee, long and short-term disability, life insurance, SIMPLE IRA plan, generous vacation, sick and holiday leave including restorative leave after 6 years.  

This position is an in-office position. Work is primarily performed Monday through Friday during regular business hours; however, evening and weekend hours may be necessary dependent upon case activity, deadlines, and workload. Some travel may be required at the cost of Our Children’s Trust.

Our Children’s Trust is a non-profit public interest law firm that provides strategic, campaign-based legal services to youth from diverse backgrounds to secure their legal rights to a safe climate. We work to protect the Earth’s climate system for present and future generations by representing young people in global legal efforts to secure their binding and enforceable legal rights to a healthy atmosphere and stable climate, based on the best available science. We support our youth clients and amplify their voices before the third branch of government in a highly strategic legal campaign that includes targeted media, education, and public engagement work to support the youths’ legal actions. Our legal work – guided by constitutional, public trust, human rights laws and the laws of nature – aims to ensure systemic and science-based climate recovery planning and remedies at federal, state, and global levels.  We seek legally-binding, countrywide and/or statewide science-based Climate Recovery Plans that will return atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations to levels below 350 ppm by the year 2100. 

Position Overview 

The Staff Accountant administers day-to-day financial responsibilities and reports for the accounts payable and accounts receivable subledgers. The position cross-trains with the Operations and Accounting Administrator (OAA) to mutually support one another. Additional finance and operations projects/responsibilities may be assigned by Chief Financial and Operating Officer.  

Responsibilities  

  • Execute the full cycle of accounts payable and accounts receivable  
  • Reconcile accounts and subledgers, maintaining compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and fiscal policies  
  • Partner with CFOO to draft and maintain fiscal policies and procedures  
  • Assist in preparation and filing of tax returns and annual audit  
  • Assist leadership team in the annual budgeting and planning process  
  • Review budget to actual reports to identify, explain, and make recommendations for variances as appropriate  
  • Record revenue and expenditures in alignment with funding restrictions and programs, at times utilizing distributions  
  • Discuss strategies and practices with CFOO on finance and administrative systems to support program operations  
  • Back-up the OAA on outsourced semi-monthly payroll, including compliance with taxation, deductions, and reporting requirements for a multi-state workforce 

An ideal candidate would have: competency in QuickBooks Online and M365, audit processes and procedures, strong understanding of and experience with general accepting accounting principles (GAAP) and audit processes and requirements, experience in non-profit setting, high level of collaboration, and exceptional policy and procedure writing skills.  

  Minimum Required Education and Experience 

  • Seven years of related experience  
  • -OR- Associate’s in Accounting plus five years of related experience  
  • -OR- Bachelor’s in Accounting or Finance plus three years related experience 
  • -OR- Master’s Degree in Accounting or Finance plus one year of related experience
