Emerald PUD is looking to add a knowledgeable, experienced, and motivated Journeyman Lineman to our team. This position directly helps with construction and maintenance of our system. This is critical work that helps Emerald with our mission to provide safe and reliable power to our customers. Job Summary: The Journeyman Lineman plays a key role in Emerald`s mission to provide safe, reliable power in an environmentally responsible manner. This position works on crews of three to five individuals to complete line construction, maintenance, and repair while following work rules and safety practices. These critical activities ensure the equipment and facilities are operating in a safe and effective manner, which is vital to Emerald`s mission. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Amount of time working in each function may vary. It is expected that the amount of time spent performing each function will fluctuate as needed for an employee to successfully manage their schedule. 

  1. Line Work- Perform construction and maintenance on Emerald`s electric lines and services on a daily basis. Respond to trouble and outage calls on a frequent basis, including after normal business hours. This includes troubleshooting issues to find the cause and identifying steps to resolve the problem. Set and remove meters as needed. Conduct maintenance and repair on street and yard lighting as needed. Properly care and account for all assigned tools, materials, and equipment at all times. This position works outside with high voltage power lines every day.  As a result, there is exposure to adverse weather, heavy machinery, hazardous chemicals and materials, and loud noises on a daily basis. In order to ensure the safety of all individuals on site, this role must stay informed about safe work practices and regulations, keep a safe work area, and prioritize and practice safe work habits at all times.  
  2. Team Contribution- Crew members rely on one another to keep each other safe and get the work done in a safe, efficient, and effective manner. This requires building trust with one another to follow safe work practices and continuously assess the environment for unsafe working conditions. Constructive, collaborative, and effective communication with other crew members is crucial in developing work plans and following safe work practices. This role should also focus on developing strong working relationships with employees throughout the organization and look for opportunities to collaborate or support other departments in order to help with companywide objectives, tasks, and projects.
  3. Work Management- Embrace the culture of empowerment by using sound judgment, thoroughly reviewing and analyzing problems, making reasonable recommendations, and developing alternate solutions when necessary. Take ownership of assignments and follow through to ensure projects and tasks are completed on time and in a thorough manner. Take initiative to solve problems and explore opportunities to increase efficiencies.  
  4. Computer and Technology Use- Utilize computer systems and programs to gather, track, and analyze data.  Help generate meaningful information to assist with decision making, increase efficiency, and maximize productivity. Be receptive to opportunities and changes involving new technologies and procedures.
  5. Customer Service- Provide exceptional service to both internal and external customers to ensure expectations are met or exceeded. This may include working with property owners to notify them when crews will be working in the area and answering any questions they may have. Working with customers in a pleasant, courteous, and respectful manner is required in order to help build Emerald`s brand as a trusted advisor and provider of choice.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned related to the job.

Experience:

  1. Must have completed a three-year state approved lineman apprenticeship program, progressed through all line crew positions to journeyman lineman, and have a minimum of three years on-the-job training with an electric utility under the supervision of a journeyman lineman.
  2. Must have direct experience using a hot stick in construction, maintenance, and repair of electric lines and services. 
  3. Must have direct experience building, wiring up, and troubleshooting three-phase banks and single-phase transformers.
  4. Must have truck driving experience and hold a currently valid Oregon Class A CDL. If CDL is not a Class A, must obtain a Class A within one year of hire. 
  5. Must have an excellent driving record. 

Job Specific Requirement:

  1. Must live within ten minutes of Emerald`s service district, or move within the first six months of being appointed to the position, in order to respond to power outages in a timely manner. Exceptions regarding the six-month deadline may be made based on current housing market conditions.

Education:

  1. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. 

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  1. Must be able to regularly climb poles using conventional climbing gear and aerial lifts and reach with long-handled tools, such as hot sticks, to complete aerial work.
  2. Must be able to frequently lift, carry, pull, and push items sometimes in excess of 60 lbs. in rough terrain and adverse weather.
  3. Must be able to crouch, stoop, twist, turn and balance on a regular basis.
  4. Must be able to safely operate long-handled trimming tools, chain saws, pruners, and related hand tools in order to clear branches and brush when the need arises.
  5. Must be able to maintain a level of fitness and agility that will meet the physical requirements of the job. 
  6. Must be able to continuously assess the environment due to regular exposure to high voltage power lines, heavy equipment, inclement weather, rough terrain, and hazardous chemicals in order to ensure personal safety and the safety of others. 
  7. Must be willing to work over the regular 40 hour/week schedule if requested, be a part of an on-call rotation to help cover after-hour outages and be willing to be called out for service in the event of a power outage or other emergency.
  8. This position is subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol policies and testing.
